- The following are some of my comments:
-
- >Recently I got bad experience to install Zoom Comstar 620 in my
- >computer. First The PnP of window 95 always assign com5 to the modem
- >although the system has only 2 comports ( actually 3 shown in device
- >manager of Window95). Although I tried manually assigning the com2 to
- >the modem according to the instruction of technical support staff, the
- >setup of modem application software (BitWare 3.3.0) always can not
- >find the modem or causes the system lock up.
-
- I also tried Zoom's sales department and was told that they
- have NEVER heard of any problems installing ComStar 28.8 in
- Windows95! I can't believe it. Maybe the sales are trained
- to be proud of their products...
-
- Anyways, I haven't tried the software yet but I know it's
- supposed to work ONCE WE GET THE MODEM INSTALLED PROPERLY.
- This is the toughest part.
-
- Good & Bad news: I finally got my ComStar 28.8 working in
- Windows95 but guess what? It only installs and works properly
- IF I remove my SoundBlaster16 PnP soundcard! After I put the
- soundcard back in, Windows95 doesn't recognize the ComStar 28.8
- any more.
-
- I finally recv'd a call from Zoom tech support (Tony) saying that
- there is a hardware conflict between the modem and the soundcard.
- He told me to change the I/O Address on the soundcard - Yes,
- I tried many different ones and still doesn't work. He also asked
- me to consult with Soundblaster manufacturer.
-
- Apparently it is the incompatibility problem of ComStar 28.8.
-
- I'm sure you can get ComStar to instasll properly and get
- Win95 to recognize the modem by displaying: "288/Spkr", instead
- of "Unknown Device" detected IF and only IF you remove either
- your soundcard or disk controller card...or other cards.
-
- I have spent so much time trying to fix this problem but
- haven't found a solution yet....the whole experience has been
- extremely frustrating.
-
- >My computer is Zenon with BCM SQ588 PCI pentium motherboard with Intel

- >PnP feature).
-
- Mine could be the same or newer than yours. I don't know.
- I'm using AcerOpen motherboard but I don't know about the
- BIOS version of mine. I will check.
-
- >So, what causes the failure installing the PnP Comstar 620 on my
- >computer?
-
- As mentioned above, it could very possible be the CONFLICT
- between hardware devices.
